Compassion in practice: Advancing trauma-informed care (in pharmacy)

Not all trauma leaves visible scars—and in pharmacy, the way we listen, speak, and connect can make a profound difference. This session unpacks how trauma shapes patient behaviour and healthcare access, and how pharmacists can respond with compassion and confidence. Walk away with practical tools to support safer, more respectful care in any practice setting.

This presentation will address the following learning objectives:

  • Explain how trauma can affect patient behaviour and healthcare engagement and access
  • Identify signs and triggers of past or ongoing trauma in patient interactions
  • Describe how trauma-informed care principles can be applied to everyday pharmacy interactions
  • Identify communication techniques to create a safe, supportive environment for trauma-affected individuals
