Geography doesn't have an equal destiny in health care

Australia’s postcode lottery in healthcare access is real—and it’s costing lives. From medication deserts in remote communities to fragmented care pathways in regional towns, geography continues to shape health outcomes in ways that are inequitable and avoidable. This session explores how pharmacy professionals can contribute to redesigning systems that work for all Australians, regardless of where they live. Drawing on real-world data, policy reform efforts, and innovative service models, this session will unpack the structural barriers and spotlight scalable solutions. Whether you're working in a metro hospital or a rural clinic, this conversation is for anyone committed to equity in healthcare.

This presentation will address the following learning objectives:

  • Identify key geographic disparities in medication access and health outcomes across Australia.
  • Describe the systemic and policy-level factors contributing to inequitable healthcare delivery in rural and remote settings.
  • Evaluate innovative pharmacy-led models that improve access and continuity of care in geographically underserved areas.
  • Apply strategies to advocate for and implement equitable service design within their own practice settings.
