Safe to mix? The science of IV compatibility

IV drug compatibility is critical to patient safety, especially in complex administration routes like syringe drivers and Y-sites. This session explores the science behind compatibility, common risks, and how pharmacists can make informed decisions—even when data is limited. Learn practical strategies to ensure safe and effective IV therapy.

This workshop will address the following learning objectives:

  • Describe the principles of IV drug compatibility, including physical and chemical interactions in syringe drivers, Y-sites, and IV lines
  • Identify common compatibility risks and safety concerns in multi-drug IV administration
  • Interpret available compatibility data and resources to support safe clinical decision-making
  • Develop strategies for managing situations where compatibility information is limited or unavailable
  • Evaluate the pharmacist’s role in preventing adverse events and ensuring safe IV therapy through compatibility assessment
